This recent publication by Santiago Vela on the life and career of Angeles Gulin is a worthy tribute to one of the greatest post-WWII Spanish singers. Born María de los Ángeles Gulín Domínguez in Ribadavia, Spain on 14 February 1939 she moved with her family at the age of eight to Montevideo, Uruguay where she met her future husband Antonio Blancas.
Gulin's career got an international boost after she had won the Verdi competition in Busseto in 1968. Gulín's voice was rich and large, but capable of agility. Her career was cut short in 1987 due to serious health problems all well-explained in this recent publication. Her repertoire not only included early Verdi and other belcanto roles but also lots of Zarzuela.
Gulin’s career (and life) was hampered by kidney disease and ill-health led to her early death in 2002 in Madrid. Her daughter is also a great singer on her own.
Vela’s opus on the soprano includes a short outline of her career and life, a listing of her roles, a chronology, an appendice with reviews, a discography of commercial recordings only and loads of interesting photographs.
A Cd with excerpts of several of her live performances is included as well and add to the value of this lovely work. This book – 17 euros only- is a great addition to the canon of singer biographies
